[Last Time on All Aboard!]
"I just meant that he was in medical. I mean, really, I could probably do it. After all, medical is just another version of science. I would just really need his normal vitals and take him to sickbay and use all of the proper equipment..." the Tygarian prattled.
"Please don't break anyone!" Tsugumi said a little flustered. "Come on! Don't give us more work in medical!"
"It would be fun!" the Tygarian enthused. "Think of all the things that we could discover! Oh! We could be lab partners and write papers together!" Amelix bobbed up and down happily on her tiptoes as the line moved up a few more people and she hurried to close the space between herself and the next person.
Emri made sure he wasn't standing next to Amelix. "Breaking people and putting them back together is not fun. Do we need to have you banned from Sickbay? Because I don't want patients tormented in the name of science."
Amelix put up her hands defensively and shook her head vigorously in the negative, sending refractions of light in every direction. Other people walking about and in line groaned in pain as they were temporarily blinded. "Nononononononononono! I would never break people and put them together on purpose! Where would you get such an idea? I just want to do science and solve all the mysteries of the universe! I thought I would just help!"
[AND NOW THE CONTINUATION]
"I can break things..." Serafu said with a grin.
Tsugumi punched her lightly on the arm. "You're not helping..."
"Ouch!" Serafu said as she rubbed her arm. "What happened to 'do no harm' huh?"
"It was with love, so it doesn't count." Tsugumi said.
"Oh, so you do swing that way after all!" Serafu teased giving her a huge smirk.
"What! Wait; No! I don't! Not that there's anything wrong with that... or anything, it's just I don't... ah Jeez! Shut up Serafu!" Tsugumi turned her back on the smirking engineer, crossed her arms and pouted.
The queue started to move faster now. The front was ever so much closer and Amelix was bobbing up and down on her toes like a pogo stick stuck to the ground.
Emri looked from Yua to Harudori. "How do you two know each other? Academy roommates or something?"
"Yeah," Tsugumi replied. "We met on day one." She explained with a smile.
"Comeon! Comeon! Comeon!" Amelix started chanting while bobbing up and down frantically. "We need to get on the ship!"
"Does that actually work, or does it just make you feel better," Emri asked. He eyed the line. "I suppose we could bribe people to let us go ahead of them."
"Bribe?!" Amelix was aghast. "We can't bribe! And what with? All the favors that we don't have?! We're ensigns! We're learning! And I can't wait to learn everything! There's so much to know and so much to do!"
Serena listened, watched, observed, while the others were so animated. These were the people she would be working with. Maybe? She stood patiently in line, only moving forward when the line moved. A bit of calm in the stormy sea of excitement boarding the ship. Her face was just placid, not showing any emotion.
Emri sighed. "Well, if you're not open to bribing people, I don't know what to tell you. I suppose you're going to have to learn to wait in line, along with everyone else. See, we're learning. Good times."
"There has to be a more efficient way of doing this!" Amelix cried out. She hopped around Emri, encircling him as she said, "We live in the 24th century! I mean, shouldn't we all be able to just swipe a button and be where we need to be! Isn't that essentially what transporters do?! So why the manual labor?! It is completely inefficient!" As she continued to hop around Emri, she bumped into Serena and said in a rapid blur of word vomit, "Oops! I'm sorry! I did not mean to bump into you! Nice to meet you! I'm Amelix! The only Tygarian in Starfleet! But, I think you already knew that! Hi! What's your name?! Are you excited to get onto the ship too?!"
Serena quietly regarded Amelix, her dark brown eyes meeting, the brown eyes of Amelix noting the science officer's animated actions. "I am Serena Bailey." she finally spoke after what seemed a few moments long. "The ship, I shall see what it is like before I make my analysis. I can see that you are excited."
Even that small amount of communication was enough to get Amelix's speedy, excited speech rattling off more verbosely. "Of course I am excited! How could I not be excited! I have the universe at my fingertips and have the opportunity to solve all the scientific mysteries of the universe on this ship! This is my first assignment! Is it yours too? I don't remember you from the academy! What do you do? What are you interested in? Aren't you excited in the least? You seem rather, well, quiet. I hope that is not offensive! I don't mean to be!"
Emri nudged the girl next to him, not checking to see if it was Serefu or Tsugumi. "Did you have to read Shakespeare for Earth Literature when you were younger? Reminds me of Much Ado About Nothing. 'Half Signor Benedick’s tongue in Count John’s mouth, and half Count John’s melancholy in Signor Benedick’s face.'"
Serena tilted her head to one side as she regarded Amelix "I am not taking offense at you calling me quiet. It is how I am. If the truth is told why take offense?" she asked straightening her head. "What about the rest of you? Are you excited being a part of this ship's crew?"
Emri shrugged. "I'm happy to be done with the Academy. I look forward to never taking another final exam ever."
The queue moved up and it was the group's turns. Amelix prattled off at the quartermaster, "My name is Ensign Amelix Milumad! I am the only Tygarian in Starfleet! So pleased to meet you! I'm really looking forward to working in science! Tell me whatever I need to do! I'm ready to go!"
The quartermaster, a bored looking blond-haired gentleman simply responded, "Your on boarding is complete. Your loft is on the lower decks. Welcome aboard. Next."
"I am Ensign Bailey, where will I be bunking? " Serena spoke quietly, but loud enough for him to hear her. She looked back at Emri. "Academy, wasn't that bad was it?"
Amelix went by, trying to reengage the quartermaster. "But...but...There are so many questions that I have! And you didn't ask anything about me!"
The quartermaster, however, was not to be dissuaded from his task. "Is that Ensign Serena Bailey or Ensign Robin Bailey?"
Emri shrugged and leaned around Amelix to say, "The Academy was fine. Exams stressed everyone out and I always ended up with a headache for the whole week."
"It is Serena Bailey," the ensign responded, answering the quarter master. "Oh yes, some of the tests were difficult, and getting here was easier." Serena's voice was even.
"Military intelligence. Oxymoron," the quartermaster replied dryly. "Lower decks. Move along. Next."
Emri stepped forward. "Emri Goro. Wait, no, let me guess. Lower decks, right?"
The quartermaster simply answered, "Right. Welcome aboard nurse. Next."
Amelix complained as Emri came near, "So, do you want to be corridor mates?! I think we get on along well enough. I could take the top bunk and you the bottom or vice versa. Whatever you want. I just think it will be great that we are all together, don't you?" She then sidled up to Serena and said, "And you could be next to us or across the corridor from us! All of us together! Won't it be great?!"
Emri's eyes widened. He looked around the group. Serefu and Tsugumi would probably want to share a bunck. He pointed to Drelaq. "You know, I bet he's the only Klingon on the Quebec. And you're the only Tygarian in Starfleet. So, it makes sense for the two of you to be bunkmates."
The Tygarian shook her head, causing light to refract off her crystaline objects on her head in all directions, causing several to groan from being temporarily blinded. "That's too predictable," Amelix explained. "Besides, he's grumpy and bossy and you're really interesting! We'll be best friends! I can just tell!"
Emri frowned. "Well, that's not a very nice thing to say." He turned to Drelaq. "Unless grumpy is what you're going for?"
Serena stepped inside and followed after the others who were heading for the lower decks. "Corridor mates, I just want a place to lay down and get some sleep. I just don't know who will want to be bunkmate with me." She proceeded down the corridor to find a place where she could just lay her head down and relax just a bit. She also wanted to see who else would be on the ship.
Amelix suggested, "We should just all be in the same corridor and bunk across from each other! After all, we're all the best of friends as it is, right?!" The Tygarian beamed at everyone, showing her sharp teeth.
Serena gazed for a moment at Amelix, "If you say so," she said nonchalantly. "It is what it is and guess time will tell." Beneath the surface she was mildly amused but took care not to allow it to show in her eyes or posture. Serena just wanted to see what was in store for this crew and those she would be working with.
Emri looked around the group and then sighed, his shoulders slumping. "Yeah, sure, why not?" He could feel the start of what promised to be a very, very long headache. At least as a nurse, he could get his hyposprays.
"Great!" the excitable Tygarian answered. "That's the spirit, Emri! Now, don't you think that maybe we should come up with a corridor saying or something? I mean, we're all going to be together, we should have like a motto or something! Oh, there has to be something!" For what must have been an eternity of thought for Amelix, but was only a pause of a second, the prattling stopped, until she said, "I know! We could all get matching tattoos! Though, maybe they could be like temporary. I'm not sure much sticks to my hide...."
The group headed into the turbolift and it swiftly carried everyone to their corridor. Numerous bunks were inlaid into the corridors, extending throughout the ship for non-commissioned officers and lowly ensigns.
"I do not wish a tattoo, I prefer to not have too many identifiable markings that can be traced," Serena remarked as she made her way to find a suitable bunk, coming up to one she looked at it, tested the quality, "Here I will claim this as mine." She put her belongings upon it. Now that I have found one to my liking, I feel that it is time to go see where we go to get food. I am hungry."
Emri dropped his bags on the nearest bunk, not really caring which one it was. They were all going to be equally horrible with this many people this close together. He looked over at Serena. "So, is there something wrong with your translator or do you actually not use contractions? You speak more formally than a Vulcan."
"There is nothing wrong with the translator. It is how I speak, depending on the situation I am in." She arched her eyebrow upwards, worthy of a Vulcan. "You are not the only one who has asked me that same question. What do you do when you are in an unfamiliar setting? Do you depend on your skills and talents assessing whether the surroundings are safe?" Serena's gaze remained unwavering, her eyebrow lowering. Her demeanor could be determined as being cautious.
Bubbling with enthusiasm, Amelix inspected every inch of the bunk above Emri. She then sprung up to it with all the grace of a leaping lizard. Unfortunately, she misjudged where her crystaline objects on her head were and she bumped into the ceiling. "Ouch!" she exclaimed as she landed on her bunk and rubbed her head. "Well, that's quite the sensation. Do you have a tricorder? We should really study it. Take some data!"
Emri blinked. "Why would I have a tricorder in with my underwear? We have only so much allotted storage space in lower decks, so I opted for clean clothes over a medical tricorder when Sick Bay already has a bunch."
"I always have a tricorder on me somewhere...." She let her voice trail off. "Now where did I put it...?" She started thrashing about, sending prismatic lights in every direction as she tried to find it. "I mean, you have to have one on you! Something of scientific importance might get missed!"
Emri took a step back, out of the trash zone. "Even if I did have one, it would be a medical tricorder, not a scientific one. It would tell you that you have minor soft tissue damage from banging your head. That's not exactly scientific breakthrough stuff."
"But it could be measured!" Amelix exclaimed happily. "Maybe I should go and get one and bring it here?" Without a hesitation, she started to get out but stopped when she said, "Oh, no! I can't! My leaving would mess up the data! It would get mixed with whatever I did by leaving and coming back! We can't have that!"
Serena took a bunk just a little bit aways, the lower bunk. She looked up at Tygarian before testing the mattress for her chosen sleeping area. "Amelix was it? Take a moment to just breathe. All of your thrashing about will also end up messing with the data. Then calmly, carefully go get a science tricorder and then take scans for the data."
Amelix instantly froze when she heard Serena's words. She did not move a muscle and slowly (for Amelix, meaning that her speech was at a normal and non-excited speed) said, "I'll just stay here like this. You made a good point. Please get the tricorder and take the data. I'm probably already influencing it too much."
Emri looked down at his bags and sighed. "I don't suppose I have time to put my things away first, do I?" He brightened. "Oh! Or I could just hit you in the head later. Would that work?"
With a slight quiet huff, Serena tapped on her commbadge to contact the computer, "Computer, this is Ensign Serena Bailey please send a science tricorder to my location." She waited for a moment, then the tricorder materialized upon her bunk. She picked it up and walked over to where Amelix was at and proceeded to take some scans. Feeling that it was sufficient, she spoke. "Alright, Amelix, you can move, and also here you are, a tricorder for your use to record whatever data you are needing to record." She held out the tricorder to Amelix. Then she turned to Emri, "Also there isn't any need for you to hit Amelix on the head, unless you are wanting to initiate a mating ritual." Her voice was one of calmness and there was no expression upon her face.
"That is not a mating ritual," Amelix protested. "Where did you get your information about Tygarians?"
"I did not know this. You are my first ever encounter with one of your race," Serena stated. "There are so many species out in the various quadrants that it would take me a lifetime or more to even get to know even a quarter of them."
"Do you think so? Should we test that? I mean, what if we got them all in a conference room together? This makes me wish that I was higher ranked. We could sort this all out so easily! Couldn't we?" Amelix asked to anyone who was concerned.
"In terms of Federation species, I think that's called the UFP Council," Emri said. He pulled spare uniforms out of his bag to hang up. "In terms of all four quadrants, not all of them are intelligent, and of those that are, not all of them have achieved space flight yet, so doing so would violate the Prime Directive. I just graduated the Academy. I don't want to be court marshaled on my first day."
"I would think it wouldn't be a good idea at this time. I for one will be getting the rest of my belongings sorted out then I want to go explore the ship just a wee bit." Serena put the last bit of her belongings away. "For now though, I am famished, and I would like to go get something to eat." Once again, her voice showed no sign of emotion. Serena wondered just how long she would be able to keep her emotions in check before she showed her inner mirth.
"Food would be good! Yes, let's all go to the mess!" Amelix exclaimed even more excitedly than before. "Let's do it! Let's do it! I can't wait to see all of your favorite foods!"
